Soccer Boys Varsity Team Wins I.S.A.C. League Co-Champion Title
The Saginaw Arts & Sciences Academy Varsity Boys Soccer team (SASA Dragons) had an amazing record in 2009.
The Dragons started intense practices in August and were ready for their first scrimmages against two class “A” high schools -- Arthur Hill and Swan Valley.
The scrimmages helped the team to gain confidence for their first two games of the season, the first just one week before the beginning of classes. SASA played against Midland Christian and beat them 2 to 1. In their second match against Caseville, SASA again came up victorious defeating Caseville 6 to 2.
After those first two wins, the coaches knew this year was going to be an amazing year. The response from many parents and our school athletic boosters was incredible. Many of the parents opened the doors to their houses with spaghetti dinners or bought pizza for the team. Concurrently, the school started an athletic boosters club to support soccer and SASA's other athletic teams. The athletic boosters helped the team with new uniforms, and SASA high school opened its new soccer field on which the Dragons remain undefeated.
SASA dragons continued the season, playing against teams like St. Thomas More, M.M.C.H.E, Faith-VCA and New Life and beat them all during league play in the I.S.A.C. League conference. During the third game against MMCHE ---the Dragons very first home game on our new field -- the team saw a growing crowd of staff, parents and fans on the sidelines. It was a memorable time! The coaches were extremely excited over their team’s performance and the growing support of their fans.
SASA remained undefeated in the I.S.A.C. until the last game of the season against New Life Christian Academy. SASA dragons lost, but due to their amazing record, tied as Co-Champions in the conference. The Saginaw Arts & Sciences Academy team then went to play their first two district games at AHHS, using the Memorial Stadium as the home field. In the first round, SASA defeated Caseville in a tough match 3 to 2, but lost in the second round to Marlette 0 to 2.
The SASA record for this year 2009 was 10-3-0.
The coaches want to thank all the team members. Everyone that is part of our team played as an important role during the 2009 season. We want everyone to be mentioned. We were given the option during the coaches meeting to select only three players for each team and two honorable mentions. After much deliberation, we came up with our first and second team and honorable mention student lists. Our first team members are: Ryan Sarmiento, Jamal Yearwood, and Quinn Kemerer. Second team: Nicolas Sarmiento, Tjark Moldehn, and Nicholas Squanda. Honorable Mention: Zachary Hawley and Peter Bonk.
The coaches want to thank everyone who supported us during this rewarding season 2009. To Mrs. Balcueva, Mrs. Kemerer and the Recreation, Enrichment and Academic Program (R.E.A.P.) Coordinator, Mrs. Tennant for being there for the team - your help was priceless. Our thanks also to the S.A.S.A School Principal Mrs. Janet Nash and SASA Athletic Director Mrs. Melleretha Moses-Johnson for being patient with us and supporting us. Last, but not least, to all the parents for letting us coach the boys in rain and cold and making them winners this year 2009.
